AI discovery is another channel that sends traffic to the storefront, so both the catalog data and the landing experience have to hold up.

There's a lot of talk about whether the storefront still matters as AI changes discovery. Wrong question. AI isn't replacing it—it's another sales channel that sends traffic to it. When someone asks "find me X under $Y" and you show up, that's traffic. Where does it land? Your site. Unoptimized or broken storefronts drop it. The storefront matters more than ever: that's where AI-driven discovery turns into sales.
The right question: how do you show up for humans *and* AI? Backend—feeds, schema, policies—gets you into the answer and sends traffic. The storefront earns trust and conversion when it lands. Optimize both. Miss either and you're invisible or bleeding traffic.
Shopify's direction is clear. Agentic Storefronts (Winter '26): one setup in Admin, live on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot—more AI surfaces coming. Agent-ready by default. The front end doesn't go away; it becomes one layer, and a more critical one. AI will bring more traffic than ever. That traffic has to convert somewhere. Unoptimized sites drop it. So it's never been more important to optimize backend and frontend for human and AI. The other layer is what agents read: product data, Knowledge Base, metafields. That's GEO—optimizing for how AI cites and recommends you, not just Google. Under ACP, your feed is the primary authority. Thin or stale data = invisible. No amount of hero images fixes that.
What's next: more AI channels, more surfaces on UCP/MCP and feeds. Discovery shifts toward "find me X under $Y" in chat. Adaptation isn't optional.
Merchants and store owners: treat product data and policies as core assets. Rich descriptions, accurate availability, clear policies. Set up Agentic Storefronts and Knowledge Base. Optional catalog fields—materials, certifications, reviews—become GEO differentiators. Feed quality and freshness (15-min refresh where it matters) affect whether you show up.
Devs: structured data, metafields, and feeds are first-class. Schema.org, JSON-LD, UCP-compliant APIs—that's how agents and GEO see you. Own the pipeline that feeds the catalog to AI surfaces. Secure it. Document it. The APIs agents hit are as critical as the ones your storefront hits.
Don't choose between a great storefront and an agent-ready backend. Do both. Brands that optimize for human and AI, backend and frontend, will show up in the answer and turn that traffic into sales. The rest stay invisible or bleed it.
What's one change you've made (or are planning) to get your catalog or store agent-ready?
