What to build, what to defer, and which consequences a team can maintain.
The post
Senior engineering is not mostly about writing code faster.
It's about choosing consequences you can live with.
What do we build now? What do we defer? What do we simplify? What tradeoff will still make sense when the business changes the rule next quarter?
Junior work optimizes for completion. Senior work optimizes for consequences.
Will this scale operationally? Who owns it? What breaks when the assumptions shift? What are we making harder to change by shipping today?
The best senior engineers slow down at the right moments. They ask what problem is actually being solved — and whether the system already has a place for the answer.
That doesn't trend. It compounds.
You see it six months later when fewer projects need rescue.
Decision quality is the skill. Code is one output.
