Membership across a headless store and checkout

Membership commerce brand · 2023–2024 · v1.0

§ 004.1 · executive summary

I worked on a Hydrogen storefront and built membership features using Shopify's native subscription APIs, with checkout offers, loyalty, AI-assisted search, upsells, and member-aware discounts. Graphic-heavy landing pages went from 25+ seconds to under 5 seconds to load.

§ 004.2 · problem statement

Membership needed to work across the storefront, subscription lifecycle, and checkout rather than remaining a promotional block disconnected from pricing.

§ 004.3 · architecture decision

I connected membership behavior with backend synchronization and renewal emails, then used checkout extensions for offers and Shopify Functions for product and shipping discounts.

§ 004.4 · tradeoffs accepted

The storefront, subscription state, and checkout presentation have different responsibilities. Keeping these separate made configuration clearer but required coordination across the interfaces.

Merchant-configurable checkout

The checkout manager supported membership offers, promotional blocks, and tag-based upsells. Merchants configured product references and content through the checkout editor rather than relying on fixed promotional markup.

Search and content

My work included Algolia search integration, Contentful content integration, and email templates. The broader headless proposal included other services; those are not assumed to be delivered contributions.

Outcome

The work launched. Graphic-heavy landing pages that took 25+ seconds to load came down to under 5 seconds. Those numbers come from working sessions with the client, not a recorded before-and-after benchmark. No conversion or retention gain is claimed.
